Donna Phillips E-RYT500 B.S. Exercise Physiology and Business Administration Donna has been in the health and wellness industry for 25 years. With degrees in Exercise Physiology and Business, she has worked in Human Performance Labs, has been a trainer for football and other sport teams, coordinator for corporate fitness programs, coordinator and director for Rehabilitation programs in hospitals. Currently Donna is the Director of the Yoga and Pilates Department for the Club at Green Valley (formerly Sportime) and she owns and operates Stillwaters Yoga, Pilates and Massage, a well-being retreat located in northwest Greensboro. Donna has been studying, practicing or teaching yoga and Pilates since the mid-90's. She has her RYT-500 and E-RYT-500, and has advanced certification in yoga and Pilates. Donna is grateful for and has been influenced by the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar. She has trained with, and continues to study with, many of the most influential Iyengar-inspired yoga teachers and 1st & 2nd generation Pilates teachers of our time. In her private practice, Donna has developed a particular expertise in applying yoga and Pilates to help athletes enhance their performance and adapting yoga and Pilates for individuals with medical issues and various health concerns (such as Auto-Immune Disease, MS, Chronic Pain, Fibromyalgia, Cancer, Back Injuries & Spine Issues, and various sports injuries). She is equally successful with those who are not ill but wish to increase self-awareness, enhance well-being, and prevent health-related challenges. 'Her creativity and ability to adapt to ones needs, had become her focus and passion' Donna's gift of blending modern science with the wisdom of ancient healing was natural. Her deep interest and study in rehabilitation, sports medicine and wellness has blended with her study of eastern healing techniques, allowing her to team up with an extraordinary group of like-minded individuals - both gifted and passionate. This collaboration with health professionals, medical doctors, alternative medical practitioners, therapists and trainers creates a team approach in teaching mind-body solutions and "balance" for their patients/clients. "Working together & loving what we do, our passion is our purpose & our purpose is to help others become better balanced". Not just for Athletes! The weekend warrior-recreational athlete-professional athlete Whether you are the runner, golfer, tennis player, soccer, football, baseball player or cyclist - if your muscles are tight and inflexible you are compromised and imbalanced. Solutions to help an athlete's flexibility, mobility, tight backs, hamstrings, shoulders, are available. Donna has sequenced postures for sport-specific and issue-specific individuals. This unique specific work brings the body back into balance, improving one's awareness, mobility and control, making their game more successful. Donna, a triathlete through the mid 90's, found the repetitive training and overuse of the sport was breaking down her body and injuries were occurring. It was then when she started bringing in yoga: Integrating the principles of stretch, strength and balance in all her exercise. 'I had no choice, my body told me to stop - yet everything else wanted to keep on going!' It's pretty hard to run, when you can't even walk - a big learning moment for me. I had not ever in my life not been able to complete my task; especially that I asked of my body - my life changed that moment; if I had not experienced the break down of my body, I don't know if I would have tried yoga. Back then, I wouldn't have said I did yoga or even went to a yoga class. As weird as that sounds, it's true. I had an image in my head of what 'yoga people' were, and that was not me!! I laugh now, but at the time (early 90's) I was serious - oh well! After years of study and practice, and with a big smile on my face, I am proud to say I am also a yoga teacher! Everyone needs to understand yoga and Pilates is not just for athletes, it can be for each of us. All of us enjoy our sport of choice whether you are the 'weekend warrior', recreational athlete, (or just want to go for a walk!), or complete your day without feeling so tight, sore, stressed-out and out of whack! When I say it is for all people, it is! In my past the wellness/healthcare industry has generally taken me to extremes. I was always asked to work with the people no one else wanted to; for whatever reason, I was fortunate enough to work with the extreme athlete or the high-risk medical patient. I was OK and excited to work with anyone, and the thought of being creative and proactive in a persons' health and wellness is still my passion 25 years later; I'm just much better at it now!! I am so blessed to get to do this job - my purpose. I hear stories everyday of where people are at and where they hope to be, and whether in a private session or group I have seen lives transformed in such a beautiful way. This type of work does not happen quickly - sometimes it takes months, and often years. My intention is to create a lifestyle of balance, working and creating a plan with whoever walks through my doors. "Knowledge of yoga is no substitute for practice." -BKS Iyengar |
